Monica has been leading and teaching the Highlands Ukulele Gang since 2017. Not only does Monica teach us music theory, which is very important and useful, she also provides us with a little something we can play at home. Monica has tailored each session to the group's needs and suggestions, ensuring that we advance our skills at a manageable pace and remain challenged to improve. Our meetings are always fun and full of laughter. We have been given many opportunities to play in public, such as World Ukulele Day each February, the Highlandia Festival in June, and other events around the Edmonton area. Not only has Monica taught me (a brass player) how to strum, finger pick, and sing along, but she has created a wonderful community. Thank you, Monica, for bringing such joy into my life!

Three years ago, I read a post in a community newsletter. Monica Dear would be offering Sunday afternoon ukulele lessons at a local hall. My friends and I were discouraged trying to play the ukulele together on our own. We started lessons with Monica. Amazingly, participants in the class range in age from 10 to 70, yet everyone has success. Thanks, Monica, for the instruction, information and fun.

(Me, before taking ukulele lessons with Monica Dear) Me? Play a thing with strings? Never! I’m just no good at that kind of thing. I took guitar lessons twice and … blah…blah…blah…
(Me, after taking ukulele lessons with Monica Dear) I LOVE PLAYING UKULELE! IT IS SO MUCH FUN! I CAN’T BELIEVE I JUST PLAYED A SOLO, even if it wasn’t the greatest solo ever played. I LOVE THIS! MONICA CAN TEACH ANYONE TO PLAY UKULELE!
Truly, Monica is a great teacher, and fun to spend an hour with every week.

We have enjoyed classes with Monica for the last several years. Monica is truly an amazing ukulele teacher. She brings with her decades of teaching experience and is engaging with all age groups. Her singing talents help lead the lesson learning process and her involvement with the local and international ukulele communities makes the classes fun and allows students to have rewarding and varied playing experiences not available elsewhere. Highly recommended! We are continuing our lessons with this exceptional teacher.

It didn’t take long before I was laughing and learning in Monica’s classes. She provides a relaxed atmosphere to play as we learn and then learn as we play. Monica’s teaching overflows with a love of music that takes the edge off the more tedious part of the process. Her group uke classes are an adventure: we explore our skills, we celebrate the discoveries from our failures, and ultimately find a bit more of ourselves. If you ever wanted to delve into the ukulele community, her class is the best place to hitch a ride.
